Hazard Library & Smart Suggestions

Hazard Library & Smart Suggestions

The Hazard Library provides a comprehensive, searchable catalogue of over 100 pre-seeded hazards spanning four industry sectors. Each hazard includes suggested risk scores, recommended control measures, and HSE guidance references, enabling rapid and consistent risk assessment across your organisation.

Industry Sectors

Hazards are organised across four primary sectors:

  • Events & Production — 35+ hazards covering rigging, staging, crowd management, pyrotechnics, outdoor events, and temporary structures
  • AV/Technical — 25+ hazards covering electrical installations, cable management, laser safety, sound exposure, and projection systems
  • Construction/CDM — 25+ hazards covering excavations, demolition, confined spaces, structural works, and asbestos
  • General/Cross-industry — 15+ hazards covering manual handling, slips and trips, lone working, workplace transport, and stress

HSE Categories

Every hazard is classified under one of twelve HSE-standard categories:

  1. Working at Height
  2. Electrical
  3. Manual Handling
  4. Slips, Trips, and Falls
  5. Machinery
  6. Fire
  7. Noise
  8. Chemical
  9. Environmental
  10. Vehicles
  11. Violence
  12. Other

Hazard Fields

Each hazard in the library contains the following data fields:

  • Title — concise hazard name
  • Description — detailed explanation of the hazard and how it may arise
  • Who Could Be Harmed — identifies the persons at risk (workers, public, visitors)
  • Suggested Likelihood — recommended likelihood score (1–5)
  • Suggested Severity — recommended severity score (1–5)
  • Suggested Risk Level — calculated risk level (Low, Medium, High, Critical)
  • Suggested Controls — JSON array of control measures following the hierarchy of controls
  • Department — the department or team most commonly associated with this hazard
  • Tags — searchable keywords for filtering and discovery
  • Source Reference — HSE guidance document codes (e.g. HSG65, INDG163, HSG166)

System vs Custom Hazards

The library distinguishes between two types of hazard:

  • System Hazards — pre-seeded hazards marked with the is_system flag; these are read-only and cannot be modified by tenants, ensuring a consistent baseline across all organisations
  • Custom Hazards — hazards created by your organisation; fully editable and tailored to your specific operations and activities

The Clone as Custom feature allows you to duplicate any system hazard into an editable custom copy. This is useful when a pre-seeded hazard is close to your requirements but needs minor adjustments to descriptions, risk scores, or control measures.

Smart Suggestions

The AI-assisted smart suggestion engine analyses your project type, equipment manifest, and activity description to recommend relevant hazards from the library. Suggested hazards are presented with a relevance score and can be added to your RAMS document with a single click.

Add from Library Dialog

The library dialog provides comprehensive search and filtering capabilities:

  • Text Search — search by title, description, or tags
  • Filter by Sector — narrow results to a specific industry sector
  • Filter by Category — filter by HSE hazard category
  • Filter by Risk Level — show only hazards at a specific risk level
  • Filter by Department — limit results to a particular department

Grouped Views

The library can be viewed in two grouped layouts:

  • By Department — hazards grouped under their assigned department
  • By Industry Sector — hazards grouped under their sector classification

Tag-based search is backed by a PostgreSQL GIN index on the tags column, ensuring fast performance even as your custom hazard library grows. All hazard data is stored within your tenant database and is fully isolated from other organisations.
